The Medicare enrollment period that runs from January 1st to March 31st is called the "General Enrollment Period" (GEP), which allows individuals to sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B coverage if they missed their initial enrollment window; coverage typically starts the month after enrolling during this period​

This is your chance to:

1. Enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B: If you missed your initial enrollment period.

2. Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan: If you're currently on Original Medicare (Part A and Part B).

3. Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another: If you're currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.

4. Switch from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare: If you're currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.

5. Enroll in, change, or drop a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan: If you're on Original Medicare or in a Medicare Advantage plan.

Important Note:

• Changes made during the General Enrollment Period usually take effect the first day of the month after you enroll.

• You may have to pay a late enrollment penalty if you didn't enroll in Medicare Part B when you were first eligible.
